12/22/2005 - Christmas Time & Weddings...& Recordings
Well, it's Christmas time (technically it's the 25th but who can ignore all the decorations, lots of cheesy music renditions, and those crazy people that get up at 5am for the sales. It's madness, I tell ya.) It's also the chosen time of year all my friends are getting married (next year I'm guessing it'll be spring.)
I finished singing in one of my friend's weddings last Saturday in Austin & New Year's Eve I'll take the job again. I really don't mind attending these events by myself. Actually I'd rather brave the festivities alone than come with an innocent enough, well-meaning, platonic guy friend who gets the stares of most couples wandering how long "we've been together." Ah, singlehood. One of the major perks of being in a wedding, I've learned, besides witnessing a friend's blessed day, is that there is a plethora of free food for me to partake. I txt messaged Philip last weekend telling him about the steak, deli sandwiches, mashed potatoes, biscuits (you get the idea) they had. I think I bought one meal total the whole weekend. Thank you, Lord.
So except for weddings & seeing lots of movies (who can afford all this good cinema they throw in one month of the year?), it's a kinda strange Christmas. I know I'm blessed and so this won't be a complaint of any kind; it's just that it's the first year my sisters & I won't be having Christmas in the house we grew up in...or with the family altogether, either. At first I felt like a scrooge (hard stuff will do that to ya), then depressed, and now just kinda misplaced. But I got in my car and listened to a non-cheesy Christmas song & I remembered that at the end of the day, house or no house, presents or no presents, boy or no boy, traditions or none (you get the point), that this holiday is about celebrating "our dear Savior's birth". Dang those wake up calls. :)
I gotta say, though, one highlight this month has been our Christmas Show with Philip & Johnny Lloyd Rollins. It was like this big party at Standard & Pours, laughing & covering Elvis, & me not memorizing Johnny's song yet. Good times. I think half the room was Philip's family...sweet people. Thank you to everyone who came & hung out with us. Now we're taking a short break & going into the studio to finally record (at least an EP). I'm still saving up for this puppy which is a test of faith in of itself, but I'm really excited. My friend Wes laid down this sexy blues guitar stuff that makes me cry. (Thanks Wes.) Hopefully it'll be done by February or March...and if anyone can/would like to help financially, please do email us. We would be so grateful for any donations as it's pretty tight right now saving up as an indie musician. HAPPY CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR, everyone!
